American style waffles are one of my most favourite brunch recipes, I found the perfect ceramic-plated waffle maker available here but then I needed to create the perfect recipe.


My daughter is sensitive to eggs and we prefer plant-based, I also prefer not to use lots of oil so this recipe took many iterations before I was happy with it. These waffles are vegan and gluten-free, refined sugar-free and suitable for most food sensitivities and perfect for the whole family. My daughter and I love this recipe so we hope you do too.



  • 3/4 cup of plant-milk (we use homemade hemp milk usually)
  • 3/4 cup +2 tablespoons of oat flour
  • 1/8 cup of maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons of tapioca starch
  • 1/8 a cup of chocolate buttons (I love this refined sugar-free ones)



Whisk all ingredients apart from the chocolate buttons so there are no lumps
Stir in the chocolate buttons
Allow the batter to stand for 10 minutes
If you're waffle maker needs grease to not stick apply some coconut oil
Otherwise add your batter to the waffle maker, wait for the steam to nearly disappear and lift out
I serve my waffles with maple syrup, bananas and berries - delicious!
